Charge OR: Digital Charge Board

The current process for scheduling anesthesiologist time at hospitals and health centers across the country is very archaic. At University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (one of the best in the world) the process still involves printing out a sheet of paper, that then gets keyed into another system, and then the process repeats itself. At the end of the day, you get a call when you’re assigned to a new location.

ChargeOR is bringing modern scheduling technology to perioperative care to improve scheduling  communication and efficiency for hospitals and healthcare systems.

The Project

The ChargeOR team is making operating rooms (ORs) as efficient as possible. Many ORs rely heavily on paper schedules and beepers for room assignments. The work behind the scenes to set up and distribute the assignments is also resource-intensive process that jumps between software platforms and manual processes. ChargeOR solves for these issues.

From our understand of the current systems in place and the competitors in the field, we found where our clients would be able to get an edge, integrate the anesthesia and surgical scheduling applications, and allow for day of surgery scheduling.

• This industry is expected to balloon to $912 billion in revenue by 2025. This accounts for 1/14th of the entire US economy.

• Delays in scheduling of cases are expensive to healthcare systems and can be life threatening to patients.

The solution:

Our teams created a digital chargeboard with a partner mobile app to help ORs operate more efficiently. The platform integrates with OR scheduling tools so providers can easily find their assignments from the mobile app. During the work day, a charge provider can make room changes and assignments from the central web app, and providers are notified in real-time. All assignment data is stored for future ML analysis on how best to plan provider resources for a given set of OR procedures.
